MEMBERSHIP MEMO: From the International Membership Committee : June 2011
PRIDE IN THE BIG PICTURE – NEW MEMBERSHIP POSSIBILITIES
The goal for this memo is to broaden thinking and possibilities for new members and answer questions as to who Is eligible for membership and where to look for new members.
“An active member shall be a woman who is employed as a professional educator at the time of her election or has been retired from an educational position” (International Constitution)
EMPLOYED is defined as currently hired by an employer and/or paid a salary or fee for specific educational servic- es.
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR is interpreted to include one-to-one and/or group instruction. The chapter decides if a prospective member is classified as a professional educator.
CERTIFICATION or LICENSURE is not required. It is the chapter’s decision as to who is invited to membership. WHO will be YOUR chapter’s new members, and WHERE will you find them?
WHO?
Traditional educational positions? (CHECK QUALIFICATIONS)
Educational co-workers from all levels of educational positions: classroom teachers, supervisors, administrators, superintendents, college adjunct professors, professors, department heads, administrators, educational program administrators, etc.
School counselors, librarians, media specialists, school nurses, local/state/national departments of education em- ployees who provide educational services, and paraprofessionals and instructional aides.
Educators associated with private/charter/trade schools.
Non-Traditional educational positions? (CHECK QUALIFICATIONS)
Private tutors (educational/dance/drama/music/painting, health program trainers), public librarians, church-school education department leaders, corporate trainers, registered nurses who present educational programs, district/state/national teacher training educators, consultants, seminar leaders, etc...
WHO are others??? Keep the list going...
WHERE?
Contacts within public/private schools, community colleges, universities, international schools, district service centers, alternative schools, professional development meetings and training centers, and various other facilities. Attend and connect with potential members at board of education activities, educational conferences, conventions, hospital programs with educational emphasis, public workshops, recreation programs, senior citizen centers/facilities with instructional activities, and social and community events such as health and wellness pro- Grams.
Anywhere: Keep possibilities of finding great potential members who meet membership requirements anywhere! Keep looking, and locating new members for your chapter. Diversity of Membership will give us more “Pride in the Big Picture” as we reach out to both traditional and non-traditional prospective new members who together will impact excellence in education worldwide in a variety of ways...
