On Saturday, January 20, at 9:30 we will be visited at Croasdaile Village’s lower meeting room by a very special person portrayed by our own Betsy Feifs. At this meeting, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington tells you her story from her early teen days in rural Virginia through her marriages and motherhood and many travels and travails to become a lady much admired in our new nation and abroad. We will have light breakfast type refreshments. The cost to be announced later this week. Please let Elaine Scagnelli or me know by Tuesday, January 16, if you are coming. Thanks.
Our second program will be on March 3 at 9:30 at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church’s parlor. At this meeting Gerry Larson and Ann Wilder will lead a discussion on this book, Evicted: Poverty & Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. The book is available at the Durham Public Library, local bookstores and on amazon.
Gerry sent this information about the selected book:
Evicted: Poverty & Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond.
Nonfiction Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Carnegie Medial and more: NYTimes Book of the Year
This landmark work of scholarship and reportage will forever change the way we look at poverty in America In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. In vivid, intimate prose, Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America's vast inequality—and to people's determination and intelligence in the face of hardship. A powerful message for Americans.
Go ahead and get the book so you are ready for the next cold, snowy day when you want to just curl up and read!
